Brian Hoyer was benched in the second quarter of Sunday's Week 6 game against the Redskins.
Hoyer was struggling to move the offense before getting benched, completing just 4-of-11 passes for 34 yards. The 49ers had a short leash with Hoyer with the Redskins pulling away early. C.J. Beathard replaced Hoyer and could take over the staring job moving forward.

Brian Hoyer completed 29-of-46 passes for 353 yards and two touchdowns in the 49ers' 26-23, Week 5 loss to the Colts.
Hoyer wasn't doing much until the 49ers' offense exploded late in the fourth quarter. They got the ball down by 14 with under six minutes to go, and Hoyer led back-to-back touchdown drives with hookups to Kyle Juszczyk on a shovel pass and then George Kittle on a fourth-and-goal play to send it to overtime. Hoyer has had the two best games of his career in Indianapolis the past two seasons with the Bears and Niners. Hoyer and the 0-5 49ers travel to face the Redskins in Week 6.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan is not considering benching Brian Hoyer.
"I think he needs to play better," Shanahan said. "I know he can do better. But I also know when he did make throws, guys weren’t great at catching them for him, either." Hoyer has failed to lead a touchdown drive in three games and has thrown an interception in every contest during the 0-4 start. While it is unlikely he is a better option, the rebuilding 49ers have to see what they have in C.J. Beathard at some point.
