Scott Tolzien completed 9-of-18 passes for 128 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions while adding two rushes for two yards Sunday in the Colts’ Week 1 loss to the Rams.
He was sacked four times for a loss of 29 yards and also committed a fumble, though the Colts were able to recover it. Tolzien was exactly as bad as his stat line would suggest and possibly even worse. He threw a pick-six on his first pass of the afternoon and repeated that feat in the third quarter. Tolzien was nearly picked a third time, prompting Donte Moncrief to commit a desperate facemask penalty on Nickell Robey-Coleman just to break up the pass. The seven-year vet looked overmatched in all aspects, forcing bad passes into tight coverage while showing remarkably little awareness both in and outside the pocket. Jacoby Brissett spelled Tolzien in the third quarter and we’d imagine he’ll be the favorite to start next week against the Cardinals.

Scott Tolzien completed 7-of-10 passes for 123 yards with one interception and rushed once for six yards Saturday in the Colts’ third preseason game.
Tolzien didn’t have his top receiver for this one—T.Y. Hilton was getting a maintenance day—but that didn’t stop him from having his best game of the preseason. He got off to a hot start by threading a 55-yard completion to Donte Moncrief on the Colts’ first play from scrimmage, though it was just a simple screen that Moncrief advanced on a missed tackle. Tolzien was picked early in the second quarter on a pass intended for Jack Doyle but otherwise kept the mistakes to a minimum. With Andrew Luck making little tangible progress in his recovery from offseason shoulder surgery, Tolzien will likely be under center for Week 1 against the Rams.
