According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, 49ers RB Joe Williams will face an "uphill battle" to make the team out of training camp.

Coach Kyle Shanahan and RBs coach Bobby Turner insisted the Niners take a chance on Williams last year, even after GM John Lynch removed him from his draft board due to concerns over his level of commitment. Williams never saw the field as a rookie, landing on IR with a foot injury following a disappointing training camp. With Jerick McKinnon and Matt Breida firmly ahead of him on the team's running back depth chart, the fourth-round pick will likely need a big summer to crack the 53-man roster.

49ers RB Joe Williams is fully recovered from the ankle injury that cost him his rookie season.

Williams struggled with ball security and pass-protection assignments on the practice field before the 49ers stashed him on I.R. A hyped 2017 fourth-round pick out of Utah with 4.41 straight-line speed, Williams was targeted in the draft to become Kyle Shanahan's next Tevin Coleman. With Carlos Hyde set for free agency, Williams should get another long look this offseason, although he'll enter the spring behind 2017 UDFA Matt Breida.
