Jay Cutler completed one-of-two passes for six yards Sunday in the Dolphins' Week 17 loss to the Bills.

He logged just three snaps before handing the reigns to David Fales. Injuries and inconsistency have always been a part of the Jay Cutler experience and 2017 brought both in equal measure. Plucked from the Fox broadcast booth in early August, Cutler came out of retirement to reunite with his former Bears OC Adam Gase in Miami. Admittedly out of shape (Cutler insists cardio isn’t a prerequisite to playing the quarterback position), Smokin’ Jay was predictably scattershot for the Dolphins, balancing his 19 touchdowns with 14 interceptions. He caught lightning in a bottle with a stunning upset of New England in Week 14 (263 yards, three touchdowns) but followed that up by losing each of his next three starts. Cutler’s only 300-yard performance came against Oakland in Week 9. With Ryan Tannehill expected back next year and Cutler only on a one-year deal, it’s quite possible the 34-year-old has played his last game.

Jay Cutler said he will only return in 2018 as a starter.

"I wouldn’t want to move again and go somewhere and just to back up," Cutler said. The reluctance to take a backup job is likely the reason Cutler was headed to the broadcast booth before Ryan Tannehill went down with a knee injury, and he is unlikely to find much more interest on the open market this spring following another up-and-down season. If he is serious about only returning for a starting job, Cutler could be playing his final game on Sunday.

Jay Cutler completed 19-of-38 passes for 286 yards and a touchdown in the Dolphins' Week 16 loss to Kansas City.

His big play came on a 65-yard screen pass touchdown to Jakeem Grant. Otherwise, it was a largely quiet game for Cutler and the entirety of Miami's offense, which managed 13 points. Cutler did commit zero turnovers and take zero sacks, but the Dolphins were never really in position to pull this upset. Cutler's disappointing first (only?) season as a Fin will end in Week 17 against the Bills.
